Money isn't the end goal. It's a medium to aquire what you desire. A great merchant would recognize the value of long term benefits over short term poisoned deals. The Golden Bank doesn't really value the Baron for anything particular, so the value of the offer will quickly diminish over time, as the baron's own value as a piece in the conflict against Dmitri diminishes as well. He must have realized this, and decided to instead side with the faction that would provide greater stability.
