          This is a story about Jay growth, of course it has to show how he will evolve. And I really don't agree with you. When they are characters that are better than him it's always clearly shown. And then the goal is set to surpass them. There is nothing illogical about his growth. Against the Japanese team you are ignoring various important elements in purpose, first Jay was backed by two Light Cavalry members that are in the best team, second he was taught how to pedal the most efficient way possible, and third Japanese team leader wasn't in her best form.
